There are some movies that are just great in my book but just seem overlooked. The great ones usually slip under the radar. I guess that's why they call them sleepers.

The Straight Story
A Simple Plan
Door To Door
To End All Wars
A Trip To Bountiful
A Midnight Clear
The Legend Of 1900
A Simple Twist of Fate
Wilder Napalm
The Apostle

We met when we were both 16 and became close friends for the decades that followed.  Diane lives down in Louisiana and I thought I'd share an email that she sent to me. Thought you'd all enjoy the read as well as to continue praying for those whose lives were affected by Hurricane Katrina.  Diane has this shining spirit that I've always admired.  It shines through in this letter.  For some reason a line from the movie STARMAN comes to me. "Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you?  You are at your best when things are worse."  But this woman seems to me to always be at her best.  Good times and bad bad times, she always shines.

David-
I've enjoyed getting the pics and news from you and think you have a beautiful family!!!   What a great Dad you are!!
We are all hanging in there in the recovery phase after the storm which is not likely to be finished any time soon.  We still have John's family living with us in our garage apt. and house and that is going remarkably well. Mom has finally gotten an apt in Az. to be near her twin sister ans she is doing fine.   I've had her house gutted and cleaned out down to the studs and rafters only.   It's a shell.   We're not sure what or if we will do anything with it as she can't live any where near that environment due to her health.  Her home also sustained damage from the oil refinery which spilled millions of tons of oil into those areas in the days after the storm.  As did John's family too.  They all lived close to one another.  His parents did get a FEMA trailer which they've had set up in their front yard for the last month but no power.  Needless to say they go back and forth here and there.  They too have had their house gutted and the debris still lies in waiting in their front yard, 10 feet tall and as wide as the house.  Since the home was affected by the oil , Murphy has to take it away and thus far has not found a dumpsite that will take it yet.  Imagine that, as if its not depressing enough, but everything you ever owned is still haunting them in plain site.   They seem to doing great with it though.  They just keep busy and are still not sure if or when they will will rebuild.  John's sister and her husband who live in out garage are in the process of buying a home very near to us.. like across the street..  That'll be great with us ,, we all get along fine.   I'm working some .. and John is gone alot of the time, except on weekends. The kids are ok,, 3 teenagers now, Corin will be 20 soon, and then Nicole is 10. Yeh,,, love those babies!!  They grow up.
MikeRoberts was here for a few days on a mission trip to help locally .  It was fun to see him again and fwe reminised..I found all my camp and Gadsden pics. What fond memories.!!

"God, be with John & Diane.  Be with and bless every member of this precious family.  Bless, protect and let prosper everyone seeking shelter in that good home of theirs.  -Amen"

A DIANE UPDATE 01/15/06

So , it's late, and I've just drank too much coffee, so I decide to dink around on the e'mail and read your site. There is a note to all who read it about our family and the countless others who are sharing the same challenges in life. Thank you so much and I'm glad that you shared it.  I guess an update would be nice.
Not much has changed.  My in'laws finally got power to their FEMA trailer so now they can turn on the lights and use the fridge.  It is in their front yard, they are vowing not to rebuild but still living there. Good thing is that the trash has been hauled away so it smells a little better there. I guess its hard to leave a place you love. My father in law who also lost their fishing camp in Hopedale, has decided that it''s probably in Cuba! He has only a few pilings left and the boatshed is gone too. It was a roughly made shed, but it did have and electric lift to keep his little flat boat out of the water.  Anyway, he had started to make another lean-to or shanty of some sort so at least we can go fishing on the bayou and do some crabbing. He's the kind of man of 75 who has to keep busy. The whole community down there was wiped out, maybe one or two camps made it through the storm. We made that our summer spot of fishing and swimming in the bayou as the children were growing up. He had built a huge wharf  with a  rope so the kids could swing out over the bayou and drop in.  It may be gone, but our memories will remain.  My husband's sister and her husband are still living in our garage and it get smaller every day. They had applied for a SBA loan way back in Oct. and even though they have qualified ,, the red tape involved is incredible! Hopefully it won't be long and they can close on the house that they are buying. They will remain with us even after because they are buying a home that was flooded, but only 2 feet . Much of the work has been done but there's lots more to do before it will be ready. Crazy!!!  Kids are fine ,, John has been home alot in Dec. but the traveling cranks up next week.

Thank you for all your prayers..
-Diane

A DIANE UPDATE 03/28/06

I thought it only fair to send you a note to give you an update since I have been able to keep up with you on your Blog thing..It has been nice to read , entertaining and enlightning. The note about your Dad most recently really got me though. I loved him, and your whole family for that matter, and I have told you that before. He and your Mother always made me feel so warm and welcome in their home. Those are some of my fondest memories. I still have a letter that your Dad wrote to me when I lived in Houston sometime after I was married. He wanted to meet John and told me that he prayed for us.
Coming from my family , that meant the world to me.
My father never went to church with us . He worked hard and did his best though. He lost his battle with cancer a year ago . Funny thing,, the last 2 years of his life he went to our little church every week. He became the one who would get there early and put out the food, turn on the heater and make the coffee. He was an icon who was always there. He would attend all the functions and bake things .. When he was too ill to drive, he would get all dressed up and wait for his ride. So , it's not in our time that someone decides to be a follower, but Gods. I think ,,,,anyway, its how I have accepted it .. The last several months of his life, he had a peg-tube and could only take nutrition that way because he couldn't swallow. He tried real hard to accept it and live that way but it was too hard. Not even a glass of water could he have. He gave up knowing the consequences . He was ready to go home. The last week he was in a hospice facility. He knew that when he would die t here. It was a beautiful new place and they took excellent care of him. He too wanted me to take him out. It was so sad...We had his service at our church in Chalmette and it was a surprise to see all the people that I didn't know ,come .. I miss him.
We have been busy, after the storm. We finally got a new roof . The yard looks better and we have moved our chicken yard. We have geese and 1 duck that we rescued. My in-laws who were living with us now live in a Fema trailer in fromt of their gutted home in Chalmette. My sister- in law and her husband just moved out, but are living in a travel trailer in the driveway of the home that they are renovating very close to us. Like across the street.Their home in Chalmette also gitting a sitting for whatever will happen there.
Mike Roberts has been down twice with groups form his church doing work on the area. Its been so good hanging around with him. He will be moving to Pensacola in June ,, job transfer I think " DS" for the churches. Keep in touch if you can

-Diane

People I lost somewhere along the way...

Have you ever made a good friend and then life takes a sharp left and you lose'm?  Well I have...a bunch of times.  I actually  Google names of old friends from time to time hoping that I might find what rock they are hiding under. I'm going to try an experiment with the Internet.  I am going to see if these old friends ever Google themselves and find me looking for them. Cool idea huh?

1. Dan Parrish - The first friend I lost was back in 1969. I walked up to Dan's house just off Scenic Drive and he was standing on his little front porch playing with his G.I. Joes while strange grown ups were all around loading up a huge moving van.  Sadly Dans dad had died of cancer and his mom was moving back to Greenvile, South Carolina (if memory serves). We played on his front porch until it was time for him to go. I wonder what Dan's doing these days?  I remember that he popped in on my classroom at R.A.Mitchell briefly the next year.  The teacher let him sit in the empty desk behind me but didn't allow me to talk to my friend during class.  I thought he'd be around long enough for recess but that wasn't my luck.  I just remember glancing back at him and remembered him looking back at me with that ear to ear grin of his.  His mom picked him up after a few minutes later and I never saw him again.  Man...what sad little childhood memory!

2.  Mark Stephens - Back in 1987 I was attending Art Insititute of Atlanta and met this guy in the snack area who was attending the Music Institute somewhere in the same building.  His name was Mark Stephens and we started getting together on weekends playing guitar, writing songs and checking out the area churches.  The last time I talked to Mark was at my wedding 15 years ago.  You know how weddings go...you don't get to spend time with your friends because your too busy gettting married and doing all the formal things.  That is the last time I ever saw or heard from Mark.  Once while visiting his mom's apartment  (while I still lived in Atlanta) he showed me all these neat sketches on the wall that his dad had drawn.  His dad was an architect  in life and had designed much of the Lenox Mall in Atlanta.  Anyway, Mark if your out there...give me a call sometime.  I forgot the words to that song we wrote called Little David.  I'd love to see you again.  I tried contacting you but there are a lot of Mark Stephens out there in Atlanta. About ten years ago I tried calling all the Christian Radio stations to see if there was a crazy D.J. with your name tbut you were no more.

3. Allan Rhodes - You just disappeard man!  Here's another friend I lost right after I got married.  Allan used to work at the communications department at Jacksonville State University.  In the late 80's he ventured into his own video production company called Skyline Productions.  Again, I got married, moved to Bowling Green, KY and just lost contact and sorry that I did.  Allan...if your out there...give me a call!

UPDATE: J Holland sent me an email last week stating that he'd run into Allan and had been doing some work for him.  Allan is working for a video production company in the Huntsville area.  Allan emailed me a few days ago and the three of us are going to hook up for breakfast tomorrow (07/27/06).  If I were a puppy, I'd be wagging my tail.  I can't wait to see my old friend again.

4. Bill Cleabur - Was in the Navy stationed here in Gadsden, AL of all places. He started coming to our old coffeehouse F.R.E.E. House with his mate Angelo Gonfiantini back in the late seventies.  Now Angelo, I call from time to time but Bill is just no where to be found.  He was transferred out in the early eighties.   I've got this feeling that he's still in the Navy floating around out at sea somewhere. I know he's got email out there and maybe I'll hear something from him one of these days.

DISCLAIMER: My site is one of those freebie ad-supported web sites.  I don't have any control what kind of banner ad is pasted along the top or bottom of each page. They change each time you visit. My wife recently checked out my site and was asking me why I had an picture of large boobs on my site. She didn't understand why I let that dating service put thier raunchy banner across my homepage.  It didn't seem to help when I told her that maybe the gifted woman might be a Christian. Oh well.
